Library kicks off summer reading program

Kids of all ages are invited to take part in the annual Bridgeport Public Library Summer Reading program. This year’s theme is Dig Into Reading.

A kick-off event will take place at the Klein Memorial Auditorium on Wednesday, June 26, at 6:30 p.m., with a performance by Jester Jim. Seating is limited; early arrival is encouraged.

Kids may also sign up at any Bridgeport Library branch for the summer-long reading program to win prizes.

This year, young patrons may sign up at their local branch to receive a reading log or record their  books via the website, Early readers and preschoolers who have books read to them may also participate.

Teen patrons may join the “Beneath the Surface” summer reading program. Each week throughout July and mid-August, teen participants will be able to guess the location of a special photo posted on the library’s website and in the library.

Teens may also read any book of their choice and prepare a brief book review for an automatic prize. Drop the book review and/or your photo guess in the library contest box or go online and each week one winner will be drawn at random. The prize is a $10 Amazon gift card. Teens may also sign up online from the library website and share their reviews on Facebook.

In addition to Dig Into Reading prizes, the Bridgeport Public Library has once again partnered with the Bridgeport Bluefish. Children who read 10 books will receive a Bridgeport Bluefish free ticket voucher for the “Library Day Game” on Sunday, Aug. 11, at 2 p.m.

Prior to game time all participants will be honored as a group on the Bluefish baseball field. Children who read 10 books will also receive a free ticket the opening Bridgeport Sound Tigers game.

Beginning July 10, all branches of the Bridgeport Public Library will host a variety of free programs and activities. Magicians, storytellers, live animal shows, Blues Musician Dan Stevens, Kellogg Environmental Center are among the performers taking part.
