Bigelow Tea Community Challenge helps local charities

30th annual event set for Sept. 24

Bigelow Tea Community Challenge will take place on Sunday, Sept. 24, from 9-noon, rain or shine, at Wakeman Boys & Girls Club, Southport.

The 5K Road Race, 2-Mile Fitness Walk and Kids’ Fun Run is expected to attract 800 runners, walkers and kids from all over the area who will join the family-friendly event to have fun, and at the same time, lend support to what has become a major source of support for the community.

More than$150,000 was raised last year, 100% of which was donated to 21 Bridgeport/Fairfield-based charities that provide much needed shelter, food, health and educational services, counseling, crisis management services, after-school tutoring and recreational programs to members of our community.

Charities include: Bigelow Center for Senior Activities, Bridge House, Bridgeport Rescue Mission, Burroughs Community Center, Camp Hi Rock, Cardinal Shehan Center, Caroline House, Center for Family Justice, Connecticut Challenge, Connecticut Food Bank, Horizon’s at GFA, Janus Center for Youth in Crisis, Sandcastle Playground, Grasmere by the Sea, Mercy Learning Center, Neighborhood Studios of Fairfield County, Norma Pfriem Breast Center, Operation Hope, Taylor YMCA, Wakeman Boys & Girls Club, YMCA of Fairfield.

“The love and support of the community continues to amaze me each year,” said event founder Cindi Bigelow, president and CEO of family owned Bigelow Tea. “What started with a small group of 50 employees 30 years ago has blossomed into a huge event that the community looks forward to each year. Start to finish, it involves the efforts and participation of over 1,000 runners, walkers, kids, employees, volunteers and corporate sponsors who come together to have fun and to benefit countless more in our community. When you do the right thing, good things follow.”
