Man apparently drowns in fight at Bridgeport bar

A man apparently drowned after a fight outside a bar at the Fairfield-Bridgeport border early Saturday.

bridgeportpolicecarFIThe two people involved in the fight are believed to have fallen into Ash Creek, which runs adjacent to the establishment, where one man was found dead. His name has not yet been released, according to a statement from the office of Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch.

Bridgeport police responded to a report of a fight at Chubby’s Bar & Grill on Fairfield Avenue at 1:15 that morning. Police from Bridgeport and Fairfield, Bridgeport firefighters and emergency medical personnel from AMR responded.The Fairfield Fire Department Swift Water Rescue Team and Rapid Deployment Craft also responded and participated in a coordinated search.

“After quickly donning their wet suits and quickly inflating the RDC personnel started searching the waters of Ash Creek just north of the Post Road bridge,” according to a release from the Fairfield Fire Department. “As Lt. William Tuttle and Firefighter Frank Zwierlein, who is an alumnus of the Fairfield lifeguards, were paddling their RDC, members of the Bridgeport Fire Department were searching the creek wearing water rescue suits. Meanwhile, assisting with shoreline operations were personnel from both fire departments and law enforcement agencies who were searching the edge of the creek both north and south of the Post Road Bridge.”

The Bridgeport Fire Department recovered one man from the water, according to Finch’s office.

The other individual involved in the fight fled the scene and is still outstanding, according to Finch’s office.

Finch’s spokesman specified that the fight was not connected to the Gathering of the Vibes, held this weekend in Seaside Park, in a press release Saturday morning.

No weapons are believed to have been involved in the incident, Finch’s office added.
