Bridgeport crews in Fairfield water rescue

Two children are in critical condition Sunday, Aug. 2, after being pulled from the waters off Fairfield.

Emergency calls shortly after 4:30 p.m. reported two children that were unconscious in the water after “some type of accident,’ according to the Fairfield Fire Department.

A nearby boater assisted the children, removed them from the water and awaited emergency personnel.

Other rescue boats from the Bridgeport police and fire departments, as well as the Westport Fire Department, immediately responded to the area to assist. Due to the unknown location, fire and police responded to Jennings Beach to visually locate the victims and coordinate response.

Responders arrived at the victims and quickly transferred them to rescue boats and transported them to the Fairfield Gas Docks where Fairfield firefighters, police officers and ambulance crews were standing by.

Both victims were quickly stabilized, moved from the dock to the ambulances and transported to Bridgeport Hospital in critical condition. Paramedics from AMR initiated advanced life support and additional firefighters assisted ambulance crews during transport to the hospital, according to the Fairfield Fire Department.

“This emergency was quickly managed due to the practiced and coordinated response from our local police and fire marine partners and support from the Port Security Grant programs that have provided emergency response vessels to local police and fire departments in the region.”Asst. Fire Chief Scott Bisson said in a statement. “The quick actions of the private boaters that pulled the girls from the water and called 911 directly impacted the speed and effectiveness of medical care.”

Fairfield Police are continuing their investigation into the accident. The last fire units cleared the scene at 5:08 p.m.
