Local Red Cross volunteers support disaster relief in southern U.S.

Seven Red Cross volunteers from Connecticut, including one from Bridgeport, have been deployed to support Red Cross disaster relief operations in states impacted this week by severe spring storms.

City resident Janet Lyons deployed to Arkansas to support disaster mental health services, helping to provide assessment and access to care for people with emotional health needs.

American Red Cross Connecticut and Rhode Island Region Chief Executive Officer Mario Bruno thanked the volunteers for their willingness to deploy.

“We have amazingly talented and dedicated volunteers who train and serve throughout the year to help neighbors in Connecticut,” Bruno said. “When a major disaster happens, we are so grateful for their willingness to leave their homes and families to help neighbors elsewhere in the country.”

The Red Cross is at work in 12 states, helping thousands of people affected by devastating floods and tornadoes. Trained Red Cross workers are providing shelter, food, relief supplies, health services, emotional support and other assistance to those in need.

Nearly 300 people spent Wednesday night in 25 Red Cross and community shelters in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Kansas, Mississippi, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Tennessee. Red Cross workers in emergency vehicles are handing out meals, snacks and relief supplies in the hardest-hit communities as road conditions permit. Damage assessment teams are also helping to determine the full scope of the destruction left behind by the storm system.

More than 800 Red Cross workers have already served more than 30,000 meals and snacks, and handed out 4,600 essential relief items to people in need.

“The Red Cross set to work in communities ahead of these storms and we have been there every day since, helping people in need,” Bruno said. “Our work is really just beginning. We will be on the ground for weeks, supporting people affected by this disaster.”
