Firefighters from several eastern Fairfield County towns gathered in Bridgeport Tuesday, June 4, for the 30th annual Bridgeport Area Retired Firefighters Memorial Service.

Led by bagpipers, clergy and Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch, firefighters from Bridgeport, Easton, Fairfield, Monroe, Trumbull, Shelton and Stratford marched behind color guards into St. Raphael’s Church on Oak Street to pay tribute to firefighters and retired Bravest who have recently passed on.

Among those honored were two who died in the line of duty: Easton Fire Lt. Russell Neary, killed Oct. 29, 2012, and Stratford Fire Lt. Thomas McCabe, who died Jan. 24, 2012.

The service ends with the ringing of three bells three times each, the traditional signal of the end of a firefighter’s duty.
