Bridgeport Theatre Company, in response to last weekend’s three canceled performances due to inclement weather, will extend its production of the Pulitzer Prize-winning rock musical, Next to Normal, at Downtown Cabaret Theatre. Two additional performances will take place on Saturday, Feb. 16, at 8 p.m.; and Sunday, Feb. 17, at 5 p.m.
The production, directed by Christy McIntosh and with musical direction by Clay Zambo, features an all-local cast that includes Arielle Boutin, Marcelo Calderon, Tony Leone, Eli Newsom, Andreas Wyder and Melinda Zupaniotis.
Next to Normal is a rock musical that follows a mother who struggles with worsening bipolar disorder and the effect that her illness has on her family, addressing issues of grieving a loss, suicide, drug abuse, ethics in modern psychiatry and suburban life with raw emotion and humor.
The musical opened on Broadway in April 2009 and was nominated for 11 Tony Awards, winning three — Best Original Score, Best Orchestration and Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical for Alice Ripley. It also won the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for drama, becoming just the eighth musical in history to receive the honor.
